Getting Into Meditation w/out Feeling Like a Hippy.

The fact that I’m even writing a post on meditation makes me laugh. Thinking of myself even 6 months ago I would have rolled my eyes at myself too.

This has been such an amazing habit, I genuinely don’t even know how I survived without it for 22 years of my life. It’s that important, and the best thing is – it only takes 5-10 minutes so you can’t make any excuses because god knows we all have 5 minutes to spare.

First things first, get every negative pre-conceived thought you have about meditating out of your head right now, there is no way you can go into anything thinking it’s not going to work, be open. Think about it, something is clearly not working in your life right now because you wouldn’t be reading this, so why not give it a shot.

Before we even get into all the deets let’s go over the benefits because once you know those I know there’s no way you won’t try it. Humans only like to do things if they know they’re benefiting from it, it’s just the way we are.

For someone like myself who tends to stress over idk, EVERYTHING?! This is one of the major benefits I’ve experienced: it gets rid of stress. We are always living in this constant fight or flight mode and it is exhausting. (Damn you ancestors) If only I knew about it in university. Sigh.

Another great benefit is how it helps dealing with uncertain emotions. Coming from someone who used to think it was super cool to not show any emotion this one was definitely difficult, I had a shit ton of feelings inside and nowhere to put them, they were just sitting inside my cells damaging my entire body without me even realizing. Not knowing how to deal with your feelings is such a crazy feeling in itself, you’re anxious about the way you’re feeling because you don’t know how to deal with it and then you’re even more emotional because you don’t know where to put all this pent up energy and then you feel like you can’t tell anyone because you don’t want to feel judged/annoying and wow I could go on forever. Meditating is such a great way to calm yourself down from any situation, it takes your mind off of those crazy thought out scenarios you’re planning in your head that will never happen and brings you way back down to earth.

It also gives you an energy boost. Sort of like a mini espresso shot for the mind. It’s actually been scientifically proven to give you more energy than a nap.When you wake up you’re starting with a clean slate, every time you look at your phone, engage in small talk, do something you don’t want to, etc. It takes energy from you. By the end of the day you’re mentally exhausted, and why wouldn’t you be? I guarantee you didn’t think of yourself once the whole day, we are always so concerned with pleasing others it is SAD. Don’t be giving all your precious energy to people who don’t deserve it, re-fuel yourself by giving the most important person (AKA YOU) at least 5 minutes of alone time where you’re just recharging. A silly little iPhone needs to be charged like twice a day and please tell me you know you’re more important than a cell phone, why wouldn’t an actual real life human need that at the bare minimum? No one bugging or talking to you, no social media. Sounds peaceful doesn’t it. It’s really just a great form of self respect. Why wouldn’t you want to treat your gorgeous body to just 5 minutes of alone time? Be specific with who you give your energy too…..just food for thought.

It can also work as a creative outlet. Feeling stuck with where you’re at in life is way too common of a feeling. If you’re looking for answers, as cheesy as it is, you already have them their just way way waaaaay inside itching to come out. Ever think that if you just gave yourself some time to think about what you want (not what anyone else wants) that maybe the universe will be kind to you in return for being kind to yourself.

We spend soooo much of our energy beating ourselves up and being pissed off at the world for being so hard and unfair, were constantly asking for more and aren’t even satisfied when we get it. Imagine having a friend that constantly told you you weren’t good enough, always taking and taking from you and NEVER saying thank you or doing anything in return? You’d dump that person pretty damn quick. If you didn’t get the metaphor – you are the shitty person that keeps taking from the universe.

There’s so many great ways for beginners just like myself to get into this. I started out by downloading the app “Simple Habit” it has hundreds of 5/10/15 minute guided meditations on it, the only thing you literally have to do is click which on you want and it will do the rest.

I’m running out of things to say, I could go on but I’m honestly tired and don’t feel like typing anymore. Feel free to google how amazing it is if you don’t believe me. But to finish things off I want you to remember a few things: consistency is key – nothing will happen overnight, have an open mind and don’t give your energy to people who don’t deserve it – give it to yourself instead. Last but certainly not least…nothing is going to happen until you start being grateful for what you have. Don’t be that shitty energy stealing friend to the universe, I promise it will repay you.
